Description

The municipality of Hjelmeland lies at the heart of Ryfylke. In terms of area, Hjelmeland is the second biggest municipality in Rogaland and has a population of almost 2,800. The city of Stavanger lies 1 ½ hours to the south.

In Hjelmeland you can fish in the fjord, in freshwater lakes and in rivers, and the opportunities for great woodland and mountain walks are many.

The scenery in Hjelmeland is beautiful and shifting, the variations enormous. There are both high mountains and heathlands, flourishing small communities, narrow fjords and large and small islands.

Among other things, Hjelmeland is famous for its basket-making traditions and "Jær" chairs. We also have attractions such as the Spinneriet, a restored spinning mill, and old Årdal church, a renaissance church dating from the 17th century. There are many fruit growers in the area. You can also visit Vigatunet, a farm from the 16th century with a historical orchard, which is part of the Ryfylke Museum.

At the Tourist Information Office you can get information and brochures for the whole surrounding area featuring accommodation, places to eat, activities and attractions. We also have good walking/skiing and angling maps.

We extend a warm welcome to the natural world of Hjelmeland.
