Østmarka wilderness area

Contact information

Description

The forest region Østmarka in eastern Oslo covers 256 km2.

Østmarka is different from the other forest around Oslo, mainly because of bedrock formations created for 200-1500 million years ago. The vegetation here is more open, with mostly pine forest.

In Østmarka you will find recreation opportunities all year round. During the winter there are prepared, red-marked ski trails and some of them are illuminated in evenings. In the summer you can find nice, blue-marked tracks for hiking, biking routes and idyllic lakes for swimming.

It is also possible to stay for a night or have a break at one of the many charming huts. The associations DNT Oslo og Omegn, Skiforeningen and Bymiljøetaten (The Municipality of Oslo) have several staffed and unstaffed huts in Østmarka.

The routes in Østmarka are usually well-marked, but a map is recommended for longer distances.
