Description

The impulses of the opera in Kristiansund came from big firms enganged in the production and export of klipfish. These were in close contact with the continent and its culture. A solid economy in Kristiansund gave favourable conditions for the interest in opera to be further explored and developed. Already in the early 19th century, both opera and music theatre was cultivated in Kristiansund; the city had many visitors from afar. Towards the change of the century, the first self-produced performances appeared. Since then operas and opera festivals have been present in Kristiansund.

Every February the Opera Festival is arranged. During two intense weeks there are several arrangements and operas; a cultural party from morning to morning.
