Description

Which street is The Art Road on? Artists of every persuasion are attracted by the light and landscape of Hvaler. Are you curious to see what the result is? Follow Kunstveien (The Art Road) (6) on Vesterøy and you can visit some of them in their workshops as they create their ceramics, glass, jewellery, textiles and paintings. Kystmuseet Hvaler (Hvaler Coastal Museum) * on Spjærøy exhibits Østfold Museum´s coastal collections. In Skjelsbosundet between Vesterøy and Spjærøy there is an old quarry where you can still visit the quarrymen´s cabins. After the first granite was extracted here in 1873 the quarry was in operation for almost 100 years. Today you can visit the permanent exhibition "Hogget i granitt" (Hewn from granite), open all year round. And in summer musicals are performed in the quarry theatre. The summer´s artistic season starts unofficially with the whitsun exhibition at Knatten (7) on Asmaløy, the former home of Norway´s great novelist, Johan Borgen. The event attracts hundreds to its leisurely mix of art, literature and music. The house is owned today by the artist Eva Lange and author Erik Frisch. Over on Kirkøy you can visit the Kunstgata (The Art Street) (8) in the town hall, which has several fascinating exhibitions every season. Don´t miss the extraordinary sculpted art works in the sculpture park (9) just off the Coastal Trail at Rødshue. In a landcape scattered with remnants of the quarry activity of previous ages, a new art work is unveiled every summer, the invited artist working with local stone to create new expressions on this unchanging horizon. * The Hvaler Coastal Museum is located at Nordgården Dypedal, Hvaler. The museum is housed on a former smallholding, where the inhabitants would have practiced a typical combination of fishing and farming. Quarrying took precedence as a livelihood for many at the end of the nineteenth century. The farm houses were purchased in 1973 and converted into the base for the Coastal Museum, which opened its first permanent exhibition in 1990. Since 2006 it has been incorporated into the county´s Østfold Museum. This summer´s exhibition is entitled "Norsk i 100" (Norwegian for 100 years), and charts the history of immigration into Norway during the 100 years of the country´s independence. www.ostfoldmuseet.no
