What to do along Kystriksveien

The best place for fishing along Kystriksveien is Saltstraumen. Hiking and biking are other popular activities.

Kystriksveien offers a wide range of activities: At Tømmervika opplevelsesenter in Alstahaug you may rent a kayak or join a guided tours, while Seløy Kystferie in Herøy take you out to sea with their RIB, and Rock's and Rivers offer glacier climbing at Svartisen, guided hikes and kayak trips.

Scheduled trips and activities

The Kystriksveien event calendar shows scheduled events along the Nordland coast in the summer season.

Cycling

Kystriksveien is excellent for biking. You can bike the entire route from Steinkjer to Bodø in approximately 7 - 10 days. There are plenty of opportunities for day trips as well. From Namsos you can make a round trip on the island of Jøa or Leka. From Brønnøysund and Sandnessjøen you can go island hopping to Vega, Herøy and Dønna.

Bike rental is available at the tourist information offices in Steinkjer, Namsos, Brønnøysund, Sandnessjøen and Bodø.

Hiking

hike to Svartisen Glacier is one of the most interesting walks you can take in the area, and here you can join an organised tour. In Glomfjordfjellene, the mountains around Svartisen, you can also find excellent trips that you can take on your own.

If you visit Torghatten Mountain you should walk through the hole and around the mountain. Outside Sandnessjøen you can hike in The Seven Sisters mountains.

In Steinkjer you can follow the 10-kilometre-long trail into the mid-point of Norway, close to Skjækra National Park.

Fishing

One of the most popular activities in the region is fishing. At most campsites you can rent a small boat. There are also plenty of nice fishing spots on land. The best fishing spot is of course Saltstraumen, the world's strongest maelstrom.

In the southern part of Kystriksveien you will find the Namsen River, which is known for its large salmon.

Anyone being in a boat or down by the sea must show caution because even if the weather is fine in the morning, it does not mean that it will stay that way all day. Check the weather forecast or ask a local before you leave. If the sky darkens and clouds start to gather, it is a good idea to head back. It is smart to tell someone where you are going. Remember lifejackets too.
