What to do along the coast of Trøndelag

Experience eagle, seal and archipelago safaris, hunting, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, historical wanderings, riding and kayaking.

Head out to sea and catch the big one in your own boat or in the company of an experienced fisherman on a fishing smack. Join an archipelago safari among thousands of islands and islets, and savour fresh seafood served on the beach. Experience the salty coastal heritage at the trading post of Hopsjø or the South Trøndelag Coastal Heritage Museum.

Life-long memories are assured on a sea eagle, bird and seal safari in the Froan Landscape Protected Area. Scuba dive for scallops or explore history dating back several thousand years with a visit to Dolmsundet Adventure Park. Participate in one of the many festivals or simply enjoy the peace, quiet and beautiful light.

Most of the accommodation providers at Hitra and Frøya have boats and fishing tackle for hire. Most people fish here in the fjord or the open sea, but the islands also have several hundred inland lakes ideal for fishing.

Several companies offer deep-sea fishing trips with professional guides. Most accommodation providers and tourist information offices can also book fishing guides for visitors.

Even if the weather is fine in the morning it does not mean that it will stay that way all day. Check the weather forecast or ask a local before you leave. If the clouds darken and start to gather, it is a good idea to head back. It is smart to tell someone where you are going. Remember lifejackets if you are going out in a boat.

Archipelago safari

Experience the fantastic archipelago, which contains thousands of islands, islets and rocks. You may choose between the scheduled passenger boat out to Mausund, Sula and Halten or one of the various archipelago safaris on offer. For those in search of a more action-packed adventure, ocean rafting trips are another option. If you really want to enjoy the peace and quiet, perhaps a trip on an old wooden sailing wessel tempts you more?

It is possible to hire a kayak and paddle on one of the many hundred lakes. However, for the more experienced paddler, perhaps a sea kayaking trip is more tempting? The tourist information office can provide more information.

Horse riding

An alternative way of experiencing the beautiful nature is by horseback. Contact the tourist information office to book an organised riding trip.

Sea eagle, bird and seal safaris

Organised tours in the Mausund area and in the Froan Landscape Protected Area enable you to experience sea eagles and seals at close range. You will also see many other bird species and experience the beautiful nature, unique light and peace and quiet. A great way to end the tour is with a seafood lunch comprising fresh crabs, cod, salmon, scallops, mussels, cockles and more prepared and served on an islet or at a lighthouse.

Due to the crystal clear water and the huge diversity of marine species, Hitra and Frøya are well-known as diving paradises in Europe. Diving for scallops is extremely popular. Several tourism companies offer organised excursions for divers.

Hitra is home to Northern Europe's most densely populated red deer herd. Active hunting is practised here for red deer and roe deer, as well as for seals and grouse. Hunting licences are available at the tourist information office, which can also arrange hunting guides.

You can play golf on the nine-hole course on Hitra, which is set in beautiful surroundings beside the Trondheim Channel offering splendid views as Hurtigruten (The Norwegian Coastal Voyage) sails slowly by.

Historical wanderings

Traces of human settlement dating right back to the Stone Age have been discovered on Hitra and Frøya.

View archaeological finds from the region, as well as theatrical performances about life in a fishing village a century ago at the South Trøndelag Coastal Heritage Museum.

Traces of a long house from 400 AD have been discovered near the Dolm Sound. The long house has now been reconstructed to its original glory. Meals and competitions are offered here for groups.

The eighteenth century trading post of Hopsjø houses a whaling museum. Nearby is Margrethe's Minde, where you can see ruins of an old hunter's palace.

Bussekaillstua, which is a cave where real pirates lived, is situated on the island of Fjellværøy, which may be accessed on guided tours offered by Fjellvær Gjestegård.

At Titran you can visit the World War II fortress Stabben.

Cycling and hiking

Exploring the islands of Hitra and Frøya is easy given the short distances and small differences in elevation. Public transport is limited, but by private car, boat or cycle, the attractions are all easily accessible.

There are many marked cycling and hiking trails on Hitra and Frøya, which are suitable for the whole family. Many of the trails offer panoramic views over the island kingdom. See a detailed itinerary suggestion on hikebike.no

Here are a few ideas of places to visit: Margrethe's Minde Hunting and Pleasure Residence , Mount Hokkeltind, Hestnesfjellet Mountain, Inner Leberget Mountain, Eldsfjellet Mountain, Blåskoghytta Cabin, Gammelvegen Road and Kjærlighetsstien (the Love Path). You can buy maps and get more suggestions from the tourist information office on Hitra.
