The wharfs in Trondheim

Along the mouth of the river Nidelven in Trondheim you will find the traditional fishermen wharfs with storage space, quays and docking facilities.

The wharfs in Trondheim are located along the banks of the river Nidelven; in Kjøpmannsgata, at Nedre Bakklandet and along the canal in Fjordgata and Sandgata.

Rejuvenated old wharfs

The wharfs at Bakklandet and those facing the canal are largely used for residential purposes, while the wharfs in Kjøpmannsgata still house commercial businesses. Restaurants such as Havfruen, Sabor Tapas & Grill and AiSuma are all located within old refurbished wharfs and provide a unique atmosphere to your dining experience.

Kayaking in the river Nidelven gives you a great opportunity to see the old wharfs from the water.

Old houses of commerce

The traders of the city used the wharfs as storage space. The wharfs were often destroyed by the many fires which raged through the city.

The oldest wharfs still standing today, most of them located between the Old Town Bridge and Bakke Bridge, date back to the 18th century. The first wharfs facing the Trondheim fjord were built around 1750, but a number of fires later destroyed these wharfs. The wharfs which exist in this area today were constructed in the 19th and 20th century.

Enemies be aware

In the early days of the wharfs, they also served as fortifications and protection from those who arrived by boat. The river Nid was then the main way into the city.  The wharfs had sheltered terraces or galleries facing the river where people would stand and throw rocks at enemies entering the city by the sea. The terraces were later opened up to the public as common walkways.
