The Stjørdal River, like most rivers in Central Norway, is well-known for its big salmon. Early June is the right time for the challenging big fish in the lower parts of the river – coming in fresh from the sea. There are normally good runs of medium size salmon and grilse during July and well into August.
Over the last decade, good river management has provided a very good return of salmon and the river consistently features among the 10 - 12 best rivers in Norway.
Fly rods should be 12 - 15 feet with action to suit 8 - 11 lines.Lines: Depending on water levels - from sinking in early June and on to intermediate and floating during the summer.Flies: Thunder & Lightning, Allys Shrimp, Pattakorva and Mikeli Blue. Medium and larger sizes.
Normal warm clothing for fishing but take an extra sweater for a chilly night. Chest high waders with felt soles. Life jackets and wading sticks are recommended.
Hembre Farm, which holds two kilometres double bank fishing, has one of the best beats on the river. Six to eight guests are accommodated at Hembre itself. A rota system is in place for fishing the different beats. This enables anglers to try out different stretches of the river and offers the benefit of some three kilometres of good fly-fishing, close at hand.
The Hembre beat, 25 kilometres above the river mouth, has some excellent long stretches combined with good holding pools.
Hembre Farm was originally a traditional farm. Today it is a place for fishing, recreation and conferences, but still an agricultural farm. The informal and relaxing atmosphere here is perfect for conferences and holidays.
Buy your fishing license from the local angling association SJFF. SJFF can provide many beautiful beats in both the main river and in the Forra River. SJFF offers a total of 30 kilometres of riverbank at affordable prices.
