Fly-fishing holiday in Hemsedal

Hemsedal is a well known fly-fishing destination, located in the mountains midway between Oslo and Bergen, and a one-hour drive from the Sognefjord.

Fly-fishing course

Hemsedal has a very active fly-fishing club, and some of Norway's best fly-fishers are from Hemsedal. One of them, Tor Grøthe, offers fly-fishing courses. Accommodation in a high standard self-catering cabin at Grøthe Farm is included in his course.

Package deals

A weekly package at NOK 6,900 per person includes seven nights, 20 hours of fly-fishing guiding and one dinner at the farm. A three-day package at NOK 4,900 includes three nights stay and 14 hours of guiding.

Fishing permits are not included in the rates.

Book directly with Tor Grøthe by phoning +47 32 06 20 66 or +47 99 54 77 99.
Or send an email to tor@hemsila.no. You will find more information at Hemsila.

Prices and regulations

From 28 May til 20 September, Hemsedal offers unique fishing opportunities. The rivers Hemsila and Grøndøla are two of Norway's best trout rivers. In the summer of 2008 a record trout of almost seven kilos was caught in the Mørkedøla River.

In Hemsila you can expect to catch trout of 500 grams to two kilos. Hemsedal Fishing Association also offers exclusive fishing in the river Holselva - only six permits are for sale per day and they cost NOK 300.

Hemsedal has a fishing permit valid for four rivers and 18 mountain lakes. Five hours is NOK 120, a two-day permit is NOK 250 and it is NOK 400 for one week. If you are a frequent Hemsedal visitor we recommend a season permit for NOK 1,000. Children under 16 years fish for free. All fish must be a minimum length of 25 centimeters.

Due to high fishing strain and taxation of the Hemsila trout, Hemsedal Fishing Association has introduced several new efforts to preserve the stock. Parts of Hemsila River are therefore reserved for fly-fishing only, up to three hooks are allowed and it is only permitted to take home one fish measuring between 33 and 38 centimeters per day. It is forbidden to take out fish over 38 centimeters.

The cost for these zones during the period 28 May to 14 July 2011 is NOK 900 for two days, NOK 1,700 for a week and NOK 3,200 per season. For the period 15 July to 20 September 2011 a two-day pass will set you back NOK 500, a weekly one NOK 900 and a season card NOK 1,800.

Fishing permits can be purchased at Hemsedal Tourist Office, in local sport shops and at some other stores in Hemsedal. They can also be bought online at fiskeihemsedal.no. The permit comes with an information leaflet. For fishing in lakes with their own fishing permit, see hemsedal.com.

Auriivillii, the local fly-fishing association has Nordic champions as guides, providing both beginners and more experienced anglers with helpful advice on the best locations.

Price: NOK 700 (for four hours) per person including guide. Minimum three persons.
