The world-famous dramatist Henrik Ibsen was born and raised in Skien, and the Henrik Ibsen Museum is well worth a visit if you come to Skien and Grenland. The museum tells you all about the playwright’s young life, with a special emphasis on children and childhood when introducing his works. Among other things, Brekkeparken in Skien is the setting for the magnificent interiors of Søndre Brekke Gård (an 18th-century manor house), log cottages and Telemarksutstillingen, an exhibition about life in Telemark. Experience the beautiful English garden and the open-air museum, and get to know Skien’s history. The restaurant in Brekkeparken serves traditional Norwegian food and boasts a view over the town.
At the Porsgrunn Town and Maritime Museum in Porsgrunn you can experience the historical garden and the typical houses of the region. Ask about guided tours.Brevik Town Museum is located in the old town hall by the harbour in Brevik. As well as learning about Brevik’s exciting history, you can find out all about Grenland during World War II.Bamble Museum in Langesund hosts exhibitions on Grenland’s coastal culture. Jacob Cudrio’s fisherman’s shack, right on the edge of the jetty in the centre of Langesund, is home to a collection focusing on the history of fishing, with exhibits on shipping, boat building, ice export and fishing. Bamble Museum also includes the Town Museum in the old town hall in Langesund, Herre Power Station at Kongens Dam on Herre, Eik Gård – a manor house between Langesund and Stathelle, and Tangvald Mølle, an old mill.
Auen Urtegård in Siljan is an organic herb garden with some 400 aromatic and medicinal plants, roses, old-fashioned perennials and lilies. Arts and crafts as well as herbal products and plants are sold in the house, which dates from the 18th century. Concerts every Thursday in July. Groups by prior arrangement only.
Skien has a salmon ladder in the town centre, where you can follow the salmon from early summer until almost Christmas. Gea Norvegica Geopark is Scandinavia’s first Geopark in UNESCO’s European Geoparks Network. A geopark is a delimited geographical area that illustrates an important part of Europe’s geology. Gea Norvegica Geopark straddles the counties of Telemark and Vestfold.
Porsgrund Porselænsfabrikk in Porsgrunn fired its first porcelain in 1887. Porsgrund is Norway’s only producer of high-fired porcelain, also known as "white gold". You can visit the factory and see how the porcelain is produced.
