What to do in Villmarksriket

Join safaris looking for bears, elks, beavers and musk oxes.

Hiking

This region of Norway boasts a broad network of trails. Even the most remote footpaths are well marked and easy to follow. You can take part in organised tours such as guided musk ox safaris in the mountains, or follow marked trails on your own such as the 250 kilometres long Finnskogen Trail which runs along the Norwegian/Swedish border.

Biking

Villmarksriket is ideal for cycling. It is easy to cycle through the area's vast mountain expanses. There are numerous forest tracks and other quiet roads which provide excellent cycling. In 2006 a marked trail opened for cycling around Lake Mjøsa, Norway’s largest lake. A map showing the route around the lake also gives you alternatives of where to eat and sleep.

Riding

In this area of Norway you will find a number of places which cater for riding holidays. You can ride along tracks and lakes, across mountains and through deep forests. A wide range of options are available, from day trips to week-long holidays.

Fishing

Villmarksriket is known for its lakes, rivers and waters offering excellent fishing. The most abundant species of fish are trout, pike, grayling, perch, whitefish and char. Multilingual guides are available at most of our fishing locations. For fishing in Norway's longest river, please visit the Glomma Guide.

Wilderness safari

Experienced guides will take you on a safari to the kingdom of the elk, beaver and the bear. Villmarksriket’s valleys are renowned for being an eldorado for hunters. Venture out on a wooden raft – an alternative way of discovering the wilderness.

Golf

Golf is becoming increasingly popular in this region of Norway. Currently, there are a number of international courses in Villmarksriket, many of which are located within easy reach of Oslo. More info sorknes.no and trysilresort.com.

Fun in the water

Norway’s largest lake, Mjøsa, and longest river, Glomma, are located in Villmarksriket.

The world’s oldest paddle steamer, Skibladner, is still in operation on Lake Mjøsa, carrying passengers across the lake.

This region has numerous lakes, tarns, streams and rivers. You can experience its wildlife and bird life at close hand by canoe. The rivers such as the Trysil River and the Femund River are ideal for rafting. Try fishing onboard an old-fashioned river raft drifting down the Trysil River.

Family activities

Take your children along for a harmonious meeting with the animals. Visit farms with many different types of domestic animals where you can engage in the daily care.

Other popular family activities include a visit to the Norwegian Forestry Museum with its fascinating collection of stuffed wild animals and its extensive exhibition displaying the history of the forest industry in Norway, the Norwegian Railway Museum and Løiten Lys, Norway’s largest candle manufacturer.
