Where to stay in Ålesund and Sunnmøre

Spend one night at the historic Hotel Union Øye near the Hjørundfjord, and the next in a cabin beside the Austefjord.

Ålesund and Sunnmøre has a wide selection of accommodation. Here you will find the whole gamut from luxurious hotels and family-run hotels to rustic fishermen's cabins ("rorbuer") and cabins, in addition to a great choice of pleasant guesthouses, holiday houses and camping and caravan sites, situated in an idyllic scenery.

Most hotels offer special summer discounts as well as special weekend prices all year. Children in an extra bed in their parents' room are often only charged a token price.

The coast and fjord region of Sunnmøre is the perfect place if you want to holiday in a well-equipped cabin or rorbu. A small motorboat is often included, and local fishermen will be happy to give you some good advice about fishing spots nearby.

You can sleep in a luxurious bed at the unique Hotel Union Øye or Storfjord Hotel, find your peace in a cabin beside the Austefjord or Hjørundfjord, on the islands of Runde or Haramsøya or stay in a comfortable fishermen's cabin in Alnes. Why not spend an unforgettable night at Molja Lighthouse or at the lighthouse on the island of Svinøy?

Molja Lighthouse

For more than 150 years, the lighthouse Molja has shown the way for boats entering the harbour of Ålesund. The well-known Norwegian architect company Snøhetta, which for example has designed Oslo's Opera House and the Ground Zero Museum in New York City, has been responsible for the interior, with a bathroom on the ground floor and a bedroom on the first floor.

Molja Lighthouse is run and administered by the nearby Hotel Brosundet which is almost equally distinctive in a different way. Hotel Brosundet is located in a 100+ year-old protected building. As a result Molja Lighthouse has become known locally as Room 47 due to the small boutique Hotel Brosundet having 46 rooms within its building. The lighthouse is managed by 62°NORD. Full hotel facilities are available from Hotel Brosundet, including the Maki Restaurant, which has established a superb reputation for its fresh seafood.

Svinøy - an island for yourself with helicopter access only

With rugged beauty and solitude, a stay at the lighthouse on the island of Svinøy is for those who want to experience something really exclusive. Ideal for that special conference, meeting or a gathering of a group of friends.

You have the entire 900-metre long island for yourself, staying in the house which once was utilised by the lighthouse keepers. It is located 12 nautical miles off the Norwegian coast in the open ocean in an area known locally for some of the wildest weather Norway can offer. The raw power and beauty of nature is seldom closer at hand. Svinøy Lighthouse is one of the few places in the world where sunsets and hurricanes are equally fascinating.

The lighthouse buildings are managed by 62°NORD. The island is the ideal retreat to "get-away-from-it-all", to focus the mind, yet not far from the attractive town of Ålesund. Svinøy can accommodate up to 11 persons (4 double rooms plus 3 single rooms). Pricing is entirely based upon your requirements, and includes helicopter transport and a permanent staff member/cook.
