Westwards, the Atlantic Ocean is rich with fish. Eastwards, Trollheimen, the Sunndal and Dovre mountain ranges offer countless opportunities for nature lovers. The landscape varies from steep mountains to bare rocks and islets out by the coast. 

Important towns and places

Kristiansund is the main town in the Nordmøre region, and is one of the most important towns in the county of Møre og Romsdal. The town has approximately 17,000 inhabitants and is laid out on four islands right out in the Atlantic Ocean.

The municipality of Sunndal has a distinct history of water power plants. The municipalities of Surnadal and Rindal have long traditions in agriculture and have for centuries produced great amounts of quality timber.

On the coast, the islands of Averøy and Smøla along with the municipality of Aure have numerous fishermen and a fairly big fishing industry.

The municipality of Tingvoll has taken on a strong position on ecological research and ecological food production.

History

The first settlers in Norway most likely made their living in this region approximately 10,000 years ago. Rock paintings, burial mounds and other archeological findings give us an insight into what life was like here from the Stone Age and Viking Age right up to present days.

Today, fishing and agriculture are still important, along with a growing technological industry. Kristiansund plays a crucial role supplying the offshore industry in Mid-Norway. Tourism and other service-related industries are also in demand.
