You can row or sail, play golf or climb the mountain formations along the fjord. Enjoy shopping or try salmon fishing or a salmon safari where you float down the river. You can hike on the moors, cycle on the islands, swim in the fjords, or take a cruise on the Lysefjord.
If you want a local guide, the local tourist information offices can help you.
Kjerag rises 3556 feet above the Lysefjord and is popular with hikers and base-jumpers alike. A rock known as Kjeragbolten is wedged in a crack in the cliff-face. No special gear is required to get onto it, but care is advised - it is far down.
Not as high up but still more popular is Preikestolen (The Pulpit Rock) which juts squarely out from the face of the cliff, 1881 feet above the sea far below.
If you prefer not to hike, you can still experience Kjerag and Preikestolen, but from below - looking up - by taking a fjord cruise in Lysefjorden.
Ryfylke has many festivals and events - these offer great opportunities to mingle with the locals.
Throughout the region, there are monuments from various historical periods. The rock carvings at Solbakk show the early importance of boats to people along the fjords.
The Ryfylke Museum has numerous and varied facilities throughout the region, for example Kolbeinstveit Farm by Lake Suldalsvatn. Here you will find the 13th century Guggedalsloftet, which is the oldest non-ecclesiastic wooden building in the county of Rogaland.
During the summer, you can sail on the old sloo Restauration. The original carried emigrants to America in 1825.
Visit the zink mines at Allmannajuvet in Sauda, where even the walk up to the mines is impressive. Summer season only.
Beautiful churches include the two Renaissance style churches; Old Årdal Church and Jelsa Church. On the islands there are numerous stone churches worth seeing.
