Waterfalls, rivers, lakes and mountains
You will find many stunning waterfalls in the Sunnhordland area, among them Langfoss waterfall, which was named one of the 10 most beautiful waterfalls in the world by CNN in 2011. Many of the waterfalls are situated close to roads, enabling all visitors to enjoy the splendour and power of these majestic natural attractions.
Some of Sunnhordland's rivers are among the best salmon rivers in Norway.
The mountains of Sunnhordland are also a true adventure eldorado, offering endless possibilities for longer or shorter walks, which you can undertake individually or as part of an organised tour.
The ocean and skerries
Sunnhordland is located by the North Sea. The ocean has always been important to the people living in this part of Norway. Fishing has given many their means of livelihood, whilst others were engaged as sailors or ship builders.
The region offers many opportunities for those wishing to catch the big fish or just want to enjoy the dramatic, yet fascinating, coastal landscape.
The Folgefonna glacier
Folgefonna is the third largest glacier on Norway's mainland, and is said to be the safest and biggest plateau glacier in Norway. It lends its name to the Folgefonna National Park.
The glacier is up to 22 miles long and 9 miles broad - covering an area of 84 square miles. The ice is up to 1,476 feet thick and the highest point is at 5,452 feet above sea level.
The Folgefonna glacier is accessible for different kinds of activities - depending on which challenge you are seeking. Together with trained glacier guides, you can go for walks on the glacier, and even climb crevasses. Paths lead all the way up to the edge of the glacier.
Others may enjoy the easy walk up to Lake Bondhus (only 620 feet above sea level) - a walk of approximately 45 minutes. You can also go skiing at the Fonna Glacier Ski Resort.
