Fishing in the area of the Geirangerfjord and Trollstigen

Experience a fishing holiday in the surroundings of the famous Geirangerfjord.

The fishing opportunities in this area range from fishing in the fjord (season March – October) to easily accessible streams and lakes  at low level or days spent in the peaks with a fishing rod (season May – September).

There are five salmon rivers in the region:

  • Strandaelva,
  • Valldøla
  • Eidsdalselva
  • Korsbrekkelva in Hellesylt
  • Storelva in Norddal (here you can buy fishing permits)

At several of the rivers, it is also possible to hire cabins where a fishing permit is included, such as at Hellesylt Ferie-Hytter or Gjerde Camping in Valldal. Prices for a low standard cabin start at NOK 270 per day, high standard from NOK 800 per day.

Fjord fishing

Fjord fishing is free of charge and is available within short distances from all villages in the area. You can catch cod, haddock, pollack, salmon and more. As an example, the fjord threshold of the Sunnylvsfjord close to Hellesylt, is an excellent spot for fishing cod.

If you wish to go on an organised fishing tour, Fjordturar offers fishing tours for groups up to 12 people, with the skipper being an old fisherman knowing all the right spots. Price on request.

Fishing in the lakes

In Lake Eidsvatnet, approximately 20 minutes from Geiranger, you can catch trout up to 500 grams either from a boat or from ashore. Boat hire is possible from all the camp sites and hire cabins around the lake, at a price of NOK 20 per hour.

If you walk a little deeper into the mountains of the area, you may catch bigger trout, for example in Lake Øvstestølen in Valldal. There are maps available in the tourist informations showing the wide variety of fishing lakes in the area.

At the tourist information you can buy maps showing good fishing lakes and fishing permits.

Hire a boat

If you wish to go fishing in the Geriangerfjord, Active Geiranger offers motor boat hire from NOK 200 per hour and NOK 700 per day.

At Solvang Camping and Eide Camping it is possible to hire rowing boats and fishing equipment from NOK 30 per hour. Other camp sites and hire cabins usually also have boats and equipment available for their guests.
