Fishing in the Hammerfest area

At Sørøya, Seiland and Kokelv you will find good places to catch the big one and at Skaidi you can fish in a good salmon river.

At Sørøya, Seiland and Kokelv you will find some of Norway's best fishing places to catch a big trophy fish. Cod, halibut, coalfish and wolf fish are the most common species for sea anglers in this area.

In the nearby lakes and rivers you can catch the best quality trout and char. The Repparfjord River near Hammerfest is one of the best rivers in Norway, both fishing wise and in terms of scenic beauty. The record catch here in 2010 was a salmon weighing 23.9 kg.

When

The best season for sea angling is from March to October. Be prepared for all kinds of weather and temperatures ranging from 32°F to 77°F. In the winter months, the weather can change quickly.

You will always catch fish here. The most common fish is cod, but more and more halibut is caught close to shore.

  • Coalfish: More than 1.2 metres – 9.7 kg
  • Halibut: 45 kg
  • Cod: 26.3 kg
  • Wolf fish: 7 kg

Target groups

Fishing in the Hammerfest region is best suited for hardcore fishermen (individuals and groups).

Accommodation/Hire

At all destinations (Kokelv, Seiland and Sørøya) you can rent boats and fishing equipment. Kokelv Sjøhus and Seiland Explore  are good options for fishermen seeking apartments and boats in Arctic nature. Storgården Gjestgiveri and Sørøya Gjestestue (pages only in Norwegian) are both located close to places where it is possible to catch really big fish. All of the above are best suited for groups. The hosts have long experience in deep-sea angling and will give you good advice for the best fishing spots during your stay.

Getting there

It takes about two hours to travel by plane from Oslo to either Alta or Hammerfest. From Alta it is a two-hour drive to Hammerfest. Kokelv Sjøhus provide pickup service. It is not possible to bring your own car to Storgården Gjestgiveri at Seiland or to Sørøya Gjestestue. To get there you need to use public ferries. Please contact Hammerfest Turist AS for more information about timetables.
