Useful smartphone apps for your holiday in Norway

Smartphone apps can make your holiday in Norway easier and more fun, helping you find a multitude of information, from restaurants to mountain peaks.

The Norwegian online magazine amobil.no (site in Norwegian only) specializes in all aspects of mobile phones, and have put together a list of useful apps for tourists in Norway. Here is a selection of what they recommend:

Pack your bags

If you are a person who like to make lists of what to bring before you pack your bags, check out Packing Pro for iPhone (€ 2.50) or Packing List for Windows Phone and Android (free).

No holiday without keeping an eye on the weather, so download Yr for iPhone, Windows Phone and Android, or Storm for iPhone and Android.

Travelling to and in Norway

Several airlines have their own apps which allow you to keep an eye on your reservations, any delays to your flight and the bonus points you earn, to mention just a few things. SAS's app is free for both iPhone and Android. Norwegian Travel Assistant is likewise available for iPhone and Android.

Once you have arrived in Norway, you'll probably wish to travel around a bit. In addition to SAS and Norwegian, Widerøe has an extensive network of domestic flights. Their app is available for iPhone and Android.

If you prefer to travel by train, Norwegian Railways (NSB) also have an app that is available for iPhone, Android and Windows Phone. With it you can buy tickets and keep track of traffic information in realtime.

Air or train

Hurtigruten operates 11 ships along the Norwegian coast, from Bergen and all the way north to Kirkenes and back again. With their app, available for iPhone and Android, you can keep track of where the ships are, and their timetable with any eventual delays or cancellations. Also, good to know for foreign guests, information is stored locally, and you can choose when to update it yourself. That way the app won't run up your phone bill all by itself.

Where to stay or eat

Visitnorway's own app Visitnorway - nearby will give you information on thousands of places to stay or eat, as well as activities and attractions nearby, wherever you are in Norway. Of course, it is free, and you can also use it to plan your trip in advance. The app is available for iPhone and Android.

If that doesn't help you, there are other alternatives. Hotels.com has an app for finding accommodation everywhere, available for iPhone, Android and Windows Phone. So does HotelsCombined, and their app is available for iPhone and Android.

Out and about

Whatever your preferred activity, there is almost always an app for it. For instance, if you choose to go hiking in Norway's mountains, iSikte can help you find out how far you are from what you see and what it's called. Just activate the app and point the camera towards a mountain or lake, and you'll see the information on your screen, superimposed on the camera image. The app is available for iPhone and Android, and costs around €3.50.

Famous for their swiss army knives, Victorinox has an app for those who like toattend festivals of all sorts. Festival Ready, as it's called, is available for iPhone and Android. Also quite useful on large festivals is Find my Friends, which helps you loocate your friends, just as the name suggests. Of course, they will need to have the same app installed as well. Available for iPhone and Android.

If you prefer the northern lights to stagelights, however, NorwayLights is the app for you. It's available for iPhone, Android and Windows Phone, and will give you the northern lights forecast for several places in Norway.

Navigating with your phone when abroad can be expensive when the maps are online, so Stay.com's app with offline maps of over 150 cities worldwide should help keep your costs down. Available for iPhone and Android.

To keep data traffic usage low, you may also find Onavo Extend useful. It will keep track of usage, compress the transferred data, and disconnect automatically when you are connected to a wifi-network. Onavo Extend is available for iPhone and Android.
