Arctic Light Safari

Freedom. Adventure. Imagine a snowmobile journey through the Arctic landscape, with the polar night lit only by the stars and the dancing aurora.

Magical light

In the beginning of the winter, after the snow has settled, it is possible to head out on exhilarating snowmobile trips in the area surrounding Longyearbyen. You do not need any prior experience with snowmobiles; just bring your sense of adventure! On this four-hour trip you will gain a real appreciation for the vastness of the Arctic, far away from the lights of Longyearbyen.

Once the sun retreats to more than 6° below the horizon, Svalbard becomes a magical place. The only light here is provided by the moon, stars and northern lights, reflected off the snow-covered ground. The atmosphere is unique, and the mystic light reminds you that you are now far from the beaten track.

Before setting out on your trip, the tour leader will give a briefing, with a basic introduction to snowmobile driving techniques and information on the route before we dress in warm snowmobile clothing. It can be quite cold at this time of year, but our specially designed clothing will keep the chill out. We start at a moderate speed so that everybody can become accustomed to snowmobile driving.

Unforgettable adventure

Your experienced snowmobile guide will transform the Polar Night Safari into an unforgettable adventure. All of our guides are well versed in Svalbard’s hunting history, fauna, geography and local stories – so it is worth paying attention when we stop along the way! The stars and the moonlight illuminate the polar night, and on a clear day it is not unusual to see the northern lights. Reindeer dig in the snow for food, and Arctic foxes tip-toe around in the dark. The King of the Arctic, the Polar Bear, is also found on Spitsbergen, and it is exciting to think that we are guests in his kingdom!

The safari starts in the beautiful valley Adventdalen, and after consulting the weather and snow conditions the guides will decide on the best route for our trip.  We may continue deeper into Adventdalen, or head into one of the narrow valleys in the area, like Todalen or Helvetiadalen.

During the trip the guide will serve hot drinks and biscuits while we turn off the snowmobiles to absorb the astonishing total silence of the Arctic winter.

NB: All snowmobiles used on Spitsbergen Travel snowmobile safaris are modern, environmentally friendly, emit a minimum of noise and have low petrol consumption. They are comfortable to drive and the handlebar grips are heated.

Practical information

A driver’s licence for car or motorcycle is required to drive a snowmobile, and you must have the licence with you on the trip. Even though all of our snowmobiles can carry two people we strongly recommend that all members of the party drive their own snowmobile as it is easier to manoeuvre with only one person, and due to inactivity passengers may become cold on longer trips.

The tour price includes: briefing, snowmobile with required equipment, fuel, snowmobile clothing (snowmobile suit, snowmobile boots, outer mittens, helmet, face mask or balaclava, and snowgoggles or viser), hot drinks, search and rescue insurance and an experienced guide with all necessary safety equipment, including weapons and safety sled.

We recommend that you dress in warm woollen underwear, warm outer pants and a solid wool jumper under the snowmobile suit. It is also a good idea to take a backpack with extra clothing, for example a jumper, mittens and warm headwear.
