Since Nattjazz (Eng. night jazz) started in 1972, it has gradually achieved recognition nationally and internationally as one of the most important festivals and showrooms for contemporary jazz in Europe. While the main focus of Nattjazz is on modern jazz and world music, the festival also explores a wide range of styles and the borderlines between jazz, rock, ethno and electronica are often blurred. The main festival area is the old sardine factory USF Verftet (United Sardines Factory), which now contains several concert venues plus exhibitions, a theater, a cinema and artists' studios. In addition the festival uses various other venues in Bergen, including an outdoor stage with free concerts in front of the factory.
