A film festival that started life in 1991 now has significant visibility on the European film festival circuit, and with nearly 10,000 visitors in 2012 is one of the most popular cultural events in northern Norway. Covering five cinemas and a large outdoor screen, the festival was visited by more than 150 accredited journalists last year. The outdoor cinema is located in Tromsø's main square, so opening the festival up to the local population as well as visitors.
Acting as a focal point for the film industry, the festival is a catalyst for creative development of new film projects and sales to national and international distributors. The festival also hosts a number of seminars and events for film professionals. There are three awards to compete for – the Aurora, Fipresci and the Don Quixote. Tromsø festival programing is known for its focus on challenging, high quality films for a local, national and international audience.
