There are plenty of exciting events and festivals taking place all over Norway in 2012. Here is a list of the main ones.

All year MUNCH 150 In 2013 Norway celebrates the 150th anniversary of the birth of Norwegian painter Edvard Munch. There will be exhibitions and other events all over Norway.

Jan 25-Feb 2 NORTHERN LIGHTS FESTIVAL  Along with the return of the sun, a distinguished selection of international musicians come to the Northern Lights Festival. The programme offers music ranging from baroque to contemporary, from jazz to classical. TROMSØ

Jan 30-Feb 3 POLARJAZZ The world’s northernmost jazz festival on the islands of Svalbard, with some of he best musicians in Norway. SVALBARD

Jan 31 -Feb 16 KRISTIANSUND OPERA FESTIVAL The festival presents a comprehensive programme within musical theatre, and offers several opera and large church music productions, as well as ballet and other concerts. KRISTIANSUND

Feb 19-23 ROROSMARTNAN The Røros Fair has been an annual tradition since 1854. UNESCO has designated the town of Røros a Cultural Heritage Landmark. Markets, concerts, exhibitions. RØROS

Feb 28-Mar 3  WORLD CUP BIATHLON The best skiers in the world gathers in Oslo. OSLO (A)

Mar 1-10 OSLO INTERNATIONAL CHURCH MUSIC FESTIVAL Concerts in Oslo Cathedral and other churches in the city. OSLO

Mar 6-9 LINK WINTER Lofoten International Chamber Music Festival. LOFOTEN ISLANDS (A)

Mar 7-10 ROROS WINTER FESTIVAL Classical music festival with young Nordic artists together with international names such as Leif Ove Andsnes and Arve Tellefsen. RØROS

Mar 8-17 NARVIK WINTER FESTIVAL Festival including church music, jazz, classical music, markets, carnival, seminars, sports events. NARVIK

Mar 9 INGA LAMI Cross-country ski race for women only. The historic ski race covers 9 miles around Lillehammer. More than 5,000 women of all ages participate every year. LILLEHAMMER

Mar 9-16 FINNMARKSLOPET. Starting in Alta, Finnmarkslopet is the longest dog sled race in Europe. The Borealis Winter festival will be held from March 8-18. ALTA

Mar 13-15 WORLD CUP SKI JUMPING. TRONDHEIM

Mar 13-17 YUKIGASSEN. The great snowball battle! Plus music and other fun. VARDØ

Mar 15-16 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN COD FISHING Fishing, food and fun in the Lofoten Islands. SVOLVÆR

Mar 15-17 HOLMENKOLLEN SKI FESTIVAL. World Cup in Nordic skiing including cross-country skiing, Nordic combined and ski jumping. OSLO

Mar 16 BIRKEBEINEREN International cross-country ski race with historical roots, covering the distance between Lillehammer and Rena, a 33-mile trek. RENA - LILLEHAMMER

Mar 19-21 AMANDUS FILM FESTIVAL. Film festival for young filmmakers. LILLEHAMMER

Mar 22-24 VOSSAJAZZ Three days and nights of jazz and folk music in Voss, a major ski resort in Western Norway. International and Norwegian performers. VOSS

Mar 27-30 INFERNO FESTIVAL Heavy metal music festival. OSLO

Mar 27-Apr 1 SAMI EASTER FESTIVAL. World championships in reindeer racing, Sami film festival, concerts, markets, arts and crafts. KAUTOKEINO

May 21-Jun 1 NATTJAZZ Northern Europe’s largest jazz festival with music ranging from trad jazz to World Music. Many internationally renowned artists. BERGEN

May 23-Jun 5 BERGEN INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL One of Bergen’s artistic highlights. World-class music, dance, theatre – an artistic window of the world. BERGEN

Jul 28-Aug 3 NORWAY CUP International football tournament for youths. More than 1,500 teams with 30,000 participants from 40 nations

Aug 12-17 OSLO JAZZ FESTIVAL The festival presents more than 80 concerts during seven days. In addition to presenting the elite of Norwegian musicians, the festival also features many world famous performers. OSLO
