Description

The tour goes to the Russian mining community of Barentsburg. This is the second largest settlement on Svalbard, with about 400 inhabitants. Previously the majority of the inhabitants on Svalbard lived in Pyramiden, Grumant and Barentsburg. Today Barentsburg is the only remaining of the three.
During World War 2, the entire city was razed to the ground. Yet there is a sense of history about the place, with Lenin on top of the hill, looking over his people. Barentsburg is a "company city" and operates primarily in mining, and also some tourism.
If you want to get a closer insight into the daily life of the settlement, there is a possibility of a guided tour.
We will have lunch at the Russian Hotel.
