Salmonfishing in the Mandal river

Mandalselva River is considered to be amongst the ten best salmon rivers in Norway.

Mandalselva River is considered to be amongst the ten best salmon rivers in Norway. The river mouth is in Mandal and the river follows Riksvei 455 through the Mandal valley (Åseral, Marnardal and Mandal).

The salmon fishing season varies somewhat in the different zones but the main season is from 1 June to 31 August.

The Mandal River Owners Club (Mandalselva Elveiegarlag) manages the salmon fishing. A considerable amount of work has been done in order to accommodate the needs of recreational fishers. This includes the erection of signage, clearing of paths and establishment of fishing places with benches and tables.

The fishing area is approximately 48 km. Over the past few years between 7 - 10 tonnes of salmon have been taken each year.

The river is divided into 4 zones and fishing licenses must be purchased for each zone. Zones 1, 3 and 4 are designated as open zones - you purchase a fishing license and can fish wherever you like within that zone. Zone 2 is divided into sub-zones and a fishing license must be purchased for each individual area/sub-zone. Fishing is restricted to the zone for which a license is purchased.

Marnar Salmon Centre (Marnar Laksesenter) in Laudal functions as both an information centre and meeting place for salmon anglers. Licenses can be purchased there for Zones 3 and 4.

Fishing licenses for Zone 2 are sold at Møll petrol station in Holum. Fishing licenses for Zone 1 are sold at Sandnes Camping and Intersport in Mandal.

Disinfection of ALL equipment (including waders) is required prior to fishing. All fishing license outlets have disinfection equipment.
