The factory was built in 1922-23. It was operational until 1928 and has been preserved in its orgininal state. It was a sesonal business, linked to the herring fishing season, which lasted from September until Christmas.
Herring fishing was one of the most important industries in thos days. The factory on Skjærstad is today the only fully preserved herring oil factory in Norway from this period.
