Description

The sun has just appeared above the horizon, but it’s the beginning of April. How could it be? Here is the North Pole. And the following month (April) gives you a unique chance to visit the very top of our planet – either with a helicopter tour or as a member of ski expedition.

Situated so far north, Svalbard was often chosen as starting point of North Pole expeditions (S.A.Andree, 1897, R.Byrd, 1926, R.Amundsen, 1926, U.Nobile, 1928). Today, thanks to BARNEO ice base, you can add your name to this list and join a very short group of about 15 thousand people who have already been to the North Pole.

BARNEO ice base consists of ice runway and ice camp. The ice runway is an airstrip of about 1200x60 meters size, is built at the end of March on the drifting ice of the Arctic Ocean in the area about 89ºN. This is a fully functional runway, capable of landing the Antonov-74 aircraft. The ice camp is a unique complex for hosting both passengers and staff. It consists of specially designed tents with rigid frames. There are living tents, mess-tents, a kitchen, different technical tents. All tents are heated and the temperature inside is kept between 15 and 18ºC. Since it’s impossible to keep the runway on drifting ice for more than one season, BARNEO has to be reconstructed from the scratch every year.

Transportation

“North Pole Adventure” is the classical North Pole ski-tour (also called “the last degree”), which gives you the chance to experience your achievement of 90ºN after eight days of skiing from 89ºN, overcoming both cold Arctic climate, ice-pressure ridges, open water fields and possible opposite ice-drift… Standing at the Pole you will get an indescribable feeling… The helicopter will pick you up from the Pole, and bring to BARNEO base camp where Russian hospitality and Russian-cuisine hot meals are always present. Finally, you will arrive to Longyearbyen with Antonov-74 flight. Duration of the whole tour is 12 days, with three days for preparation and training ski-trip around Longyearbyen. We strongly recommend not planning any important events just after the tour, to secure the time in connection with possible delays. This allows for greater flexibility in your time control.
