Birkenes has almost 5 000 inhabitants, half of whom live in the Birkeland area, which is the municipal centre.

Birkeland is 30 km north of the centre of Kristiansand and a good 10 km north-west of the centre of Lillesand.

The region is famous for its untouched forests and moores, spectacular waterways and abundant wildlife. There is salmonfishing in the river Tovdal and a general fishingpermit is available for most of the lakes in the region.

Lake Ogge (Birkenes/Iveland), with its 365 islands and islets, is considered to be one of Norway’s canoeing Eldorados.
