Description

A must do activity! Discover the secrets of the Northern Lights. Find out how people have explained the Aurora during the Ages, from indigenous beliefs to modern astrophysics. Hear the myths and misunderstandings as well as the fascinating facts, learn how scientific progress strived to understand the mysterious Lights, and create your very own Aurora!

We invite you to a presentation in our lecture theatre, including a short film of Auroras over Tromsø. Time permitting, a more comprehensive film is also available (25 mins). The exhibition “The Aurora Explained” lets you delve into more myths and facts before trying out the terrella experiment, the same as performed by Norwegian scientist Kristian Birkeland in 1913. With our modern replica of his machine, you can make real Auroras glow around a miniature planet – a hands-on experiment unique to Tromsø Museum.
After the tour, familiarize yourself with e.g. the Sami culture, Vikings and animals of the North. Your ticket also includes admission to the Polar Museum (located downtown).
