Kristiansand

Bragdøya coast culture center

The Bragdøya is an island with a public recreation area in Byfjorden right outside Kristiansand.

Bragdøya outside Kristiansand city is a public open space of 925 000 square meters . The island lies like a green park in an otherwise busy harbor with ship traffic, industrial and residential areas on multiple sides. The island appears today as an island that has much to offer cultural and outdoor enthusiasts. The old landscape is open and the old picturesque roads and trails make it easy to find the idyllic swimming spots on the south side of the island.

Bragdøya Kystlag has created a center of culture in and around the old warehouses on the north side of the island. In Saltebua they have established a mackerel exhibition that recreates the environment around the mackerel fishery on the south coast of the past. Saltebua can be rented for events up to 200 people.

On the island lies Thaulow's house, the city's first light house, built approx. in 1770 by H. A. Thaulow. This house is now fully restored and will be used for various types of small cultural events. Every summer, organized cultural garden parties in late June. This is also the Swiss villa that was the Gerrards family summer residence in approx. 1920. Inside, there is usually an art exhibition during the summer.

Bragdøyabåten departs from Lumber, Vågsbygd all year. Sightseeing boat from Kristiansand in summer season.
