Description

The battle of Stiklestad in 1030 is the most famous battle in Norway's history. This is where the Christian Viking king Olav Haraldsson fell in the battle against local chieftains and was later declared Saint Olav. The Battle of Stiklestad is considered the most important event in connection with the consolidation of national kingship and Christianity's definitive breakthrough in Norway.

Today , Stiklestad is a great place to see and experience history. Most famous is the largest and the oldest outdoor theater "Spelet om Heilage Olav/The play about St Olav," which is linked to the events before and after the battle. The play is performed annually during the festival "Olsok days of Stiklestad" in late July. During these celebration day, Stiklestad is seething with life and you can enjoy concerts, plays, lectures, guided tours, excursions and activities for the whole family. You can also visit our medieval market where you can experience medieval music, juggling and theater. In tents and stalls you can find good craftsmen from across the country in period clothing demonstrating their skills. Daily there will be activities for all ages.

During the summer season there are daily adventures for young and old during the vignette "Stiklestad Summer". In medieval farm Stiklastadir you can step back 1,000 years in time and at the folk museum you can watch the maid Dortea and experience what life was like 100 years ago in the travelling theater "Gårdimillom". Let yourself enjoy temptations from our museum café in Molåna or visit the restaurant "Bard" in the cultural centre/hotel.

There is also is also a year-round cultural center at Stiklestad with exhibitions, musem shop, restaurant/café and meeting/conference facilities. In the same building you will also find Stiklestad Hotel, with 52 rooms and 4 suites. In the area you can walk and visit Stiklestad church from 1180, an amphitheater, Catholic Chapel and a folk museum with 30 old buildings from  the 15th -17th century.
