Storehesten means "the big horse" in Norwegian. The Big Horse Mountain is a characteristic land mark in the whole Sunnfjord region watching the inner parts of the Dalsfjord, a historic viking landscape. The mountain rises 1209 meters above sea level.
The signs Storehesten, from the centre of Bygstad will take you to the parking place, 400 meters above sea level. From here there is a well marked trail, with red T`s, all the way to the top of the mountain. Normal walking for three hours will take you to the top. A map is available at the Spar-shop in Bygstad centum.
From the top of the mountain there is a fantastic view to the Ålfot Galcier to the north, to the east is the Jostedal Glacier, largest in Northern Europe, to the south the mountains suurounding the city of bergen and to the west the North Sea.
Sturdy mountain footwear is essential. The trip is 11 km long with a hight difference of 780 m.
