Description

Borgundfjorden is the fjord right outside the harbour in Ålesund, and it is famous for its large amounts of cod. From February until April the winter fishing goes on every day, and according to the local population, "The Borgundfjording" caught here is of a remarkable quality.

A lot of the fish exported from Ålesund comes from this fishery, and the town truly lives up to its nickname as Norway's fisheries capital.

The Borgundfjord is so narrow that the fishing nets can't be cast at the fishermen's own discretion, and official authorities have to keep close control of how things are done. When the starting shot is fired, all the boats have to go towards land and cast their nets at the same speed, and with the same distance between them! In 2000, cod worth over 5.5 million Norwegian kroner was caught during these winter months, so the fjord is truly filled with fish for everyone!

Of the more bizarre stories about the Borgundfjord that could be mentioned is that a large, unidentified sea creature was spotted in it a few years back - the fjord may hold larger fish than just cod?
