Description

A photo exhibition of the explosion in Bergen 20th of April 1944.

The explosion on board the freight ship «Voorbode» by the fortress wharf in Bergen on 20 April 1944 was the largest singular accident in Norway during the second world war. More than one hundred Norwegians were killed, around five thousand were wounded and the damages were enormous.

The ship was on its way to northern Norway with explosives, but various circumstances led to its call in Bergen. Official reports concluded that the occurrence was an accident, but the theory of possible sabotage has never fully been disproved.

Håkon's Hall was, together with the rest of the fortress, damaged severely. The roof was blown off and the interiors were ravaged by fire. The rescue work was swiftly initiated, and before the winter came, the walls were secured and protected by a temporary roof.
