Description

Take the Fløibanen funicular and listen to Norwegian folk music in the midst of Norway’s fjord landscape!

FløyenFolk is a series of 36 concerts performed at Mount Fløyen by some of the best traditional Norwegian folk musicians.

The Fløibanen funicular takes you high up above the scenic port of Bergen, against a backdrop of mountains, forests and lakes. There you’ll find the traditional café and brasserie Fløyen Folkerestaurant, with its spectacular views of the town, the islands and the glittering sea beyond.

In this setting we invite you to hear some of Norway’s very best folk musicians perform. The Hardanger fiddle, the Norwegian zither, the accordion and the harmonium are just some of the instruments you may hear playing traditional tunes or accompanying beautiful folk songs, old and new. The artists represent different traditions as well as having their personal styles and specialities.

Afternoon concerts played every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 23rd June to 20th August at 2 pm. Duration: 30 minutes.

The ticket includes return ticket with Fløibanen funicular and the concert at Fløyen Folkerestaurant.

Program for Summer 2015:

23, 24 and 25 June: Berit Opheim and Gabriel Fliflet:
Berit Opheim from Voss is one of Norway’s foremost folk singers, renowned for her crystal-clear voice and intense delivery. She tours the world, often as a member of the vocal group Trio Mediaeval. Gabriel Fliflet is a colourful musician and music-maker with the accordion as his main instrument. He was named Norwegian Folk Musician of the Year in 2011.

30 June, 1 and 2 July: Aslak Brimi and Erlend Viken:
Two of Norway's foremost musicians in a toe-tapping collaboration! Aslak Brimi comes from a long line of musicians from the mountain village of Lom in the Gudbrandsdalen valley, and he is arguably the best musician in his genre. Enjoy waltzes in minor keys, lively Norwegian folk dance tunes and subdued country airs.

7, 8 and 9 July: Aasmund Nordstoga and Åsmund Reistad:
With his warm and enticing voice, Aasmund Nordstoga is one of our best folk singers. He grew up in the very heart of folk music in Norway, in Vinje in Telemark, with his mother, Ellen, who taught and inspired him and his brother, Odd, as musical playmate. He will bring folk verses, ballads and humour to Mount Fløyen with his musical partner Åsmund Reistad on guitar and mandola.

14, 15 and 16 July: Sudan Dudan:
Marit Karlberg (vocals, Norwegian zither) and Anders Røine (vocals, guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle and Jew's harp) play unassuming, intense music. They will perform broadside ballads, folk songs and improvised folk verses from Valdres and other valleys in the east of Norway. Their vocal harmonies and instrument use can bring to mind desert blues from Mali and American old-time-music.

21, 22 and 23 July: Linda Gytri and Gro Marie Svidal

28, 29 and 30 July: Tone Hulbækmo and Hans Fredrik Jacobsen:
Tone Hulbækmo and Hans Fredrik Jacobsen have enjoyed a varied musical collaboration for almost 40 years. Folk music from the Østerdalen valley, medieval music from Andalusia, collaborations with Erik Bye and Halldis Moren Vesaas. Three national music prizes and tours all over the world.

4, 5 and 6 August: Sven Nyhus and Jon Faukstad:
Few people deserve the title 'living legend' in Norwegian folk music more than 83-year-old Sven Nyhus. He comes from Glåmos near Røros, and he, more than anyone else, is responsible for bringing the hypnotic rhythm of the traditional Rørospols dance to a wider audience.

11, 12 and 13 August: Sigrid Moldestad and guests

18, 19 and 20 August: Gabriel Fliflet and Jorun Marie Kvernberg:
Gabriel Fliflet is a colourful musician and music-maker whose main instrument is the accordion. He has long and wide-ranging experience from different types of folk music. Jorun Marie Kvernberg is a musician and composer from Romsdal, who has created a stir far beyond Norway's borders for her wonderful playing and unique style on the Hardanger and other instruments.
