The unique surroundings of the fortress provide a fantastic arena for the theatre, opera and concerts which are organised during the summer season. At Oscarsborg you will find an art gallery, exhibitions, Spa and a good selection of places to eat. In summer you can travel by ferry from Drøbak and Oslo, or arrive with your own boat to Oscarsborg Marina.

History

In 1643 during the reign of Christian IV the first naval defences were constructed at Kaholmene. Around 1830 the planning started for the modernisation of what was to become Oscarsborg Fortress. The fortress was ready in 1853. The name of the fortress was given after a visit by King Oscar I in 1855. Because of the art of war developed rapidly the new fortress was soon obsolete. A new torpedo battery was constructed in 1901. On April 9th 1940 the fortress finally came under attack. The German warship Blücher was sunk by shots fired from Oscarsborg Fortress. Guided tours to the fortress and the museum must be booked.

Cultural arena

Festningsverket is a unique cultural arena for opera and concerts throughout the summer season. This year, 2013, has an exciting programme with an acoustic pop/rock festival, wandering theatre troupes and fantastic opera experiences in the courtyard throughout August – just to mention a few. Oscarsborg has an art gallery run by Avistegnerne in Drøbak. A new exhibition about the famous and beloved Moomins will be held this year. Guests are invited to join the friendly blacksmith in his smithy, where they can also buy souvenirs. “Forsvarets Hus” (“Military House”) in Kommandantboligen shows how the Norwegian military is today and the annual “Mosestafetten” (Relay Race) is being arranged this year too, as an open day on May 1st.
