Description

Dumdalen Caves. During the course of thousands or millions of years, water has washed away the porous rock whilst the hard rock remains, thus causing underground caverns. In Dumdalen, west of Lom, several such phenomena are easily accessible. Moving around in natural caverns is an experience full of contrasts. Amazing rock formations, silence and the noise of rushing water all combined. You loose track of time and distance as you move on into the darkness and you are aware of millions of tons of rock over your head. Caving is an activity for the curious who wonder what is waiting round the next bend. The caverns form a natural progression into the ground, starting with short distances, large caverns and light through openings in the mountain. After a while the length increases, the feeling of space reduces and the only available light comes from the lamp on the helmet. People who prefer to stay up on the surface can still enjoy a trip to Dumdalen, allowing others in the group to go underground. The place is idyllic and an eldorado for open-air cooking, whether we cook ourselves or bring along someone to do it.

Season: May-October. Longer if the Sognefjellsveien road is open.
Duration: 3 – 6 hours + transport.
