Description

Giske municipality is situated just west of Ålesund, and the island community is connected to Ålesund through two long sub-sea tunnels. The municipality has got around 6.800 inhabitants spread out on the four islands of Giske, Godøy, Vigra and Valderøy, linked together by bridges and tunnels.

Giske municipality has a well-built infrastructure, and the island Vigra is home to Ålesund Airport Vigra, which has frequent departures to both domestic and foreign destinations.

The islands of Giske lie in a unique costal area, and have a majestic nature with beautiful mountain peaks, fishing villages, nature reserves, sandy beaches, fantastic areas for deep-sea fishing, and the fascinating cave Skjonghelleren. A hike up to the top of the mountain at Godøy presents you with a fantastic panoramic view of Sunnmøre and the archipelago.

Burial mounds and other ancient monuments tells us of settlements here as far as 8.000 years back, and fisheries and agriculture has been the basis, and still is, of development and growth on these islands.

Make a visit at the picturesque Alnes Lighthouse, a listed lighthouse from 1876 in Godøy, the ambience and view is like nothing else! Godøy Coastal Museum gives valuable insight into the coastal culture in Sunnmøre, and the proud traditions in fisheries in Giske.

Giske church is a gem in Norwegian architectural history. It was built as a private chapel for the powerful noble family "Arnungane" around the year 1150, and today it is Norway's only marble church.
