Description

Experience the Flåm Railway - an incredible train journey from Flåm , situated in the innermost part of the Aurlandsfjord, up to the mountain station at Myrdal on the Oslo -Bergen Railway. Nowhere in the world is there an adhesion-type railway on normal tracks with a steeper climb. Almost 80 % of the line has a gradient 0f 5,5 % or 1 meter in 18!

The 20 kilometres long train journey through the steep and narrow Flåm Valley take about 1 hour. The train travels slowly and even stops at the most scenic spots. One of the halts close by the Kjosfossen waterfall gives the traveler the opportunity to enjoy the spectacular views of the mighty waterfall and surrounding mountains.

The Flåm railway is one of the worlds most attractive and spectacular railways. Work on this branch line was started in 1923, the line was opened for steam trains in 1940, and electric trains in 1944. To cope with the enormous height difference from fjord to high mountain, the track runs partly through tunnels which spiral in and out of the mountainside.

The Flåm Railway has 9-10 daily departures from May-September and 4 daily departures from October - April. Most trains connect at Myrdal with trains on the Oslo-Bergen Railway.
