Description

Ofossen mill is an oldfashioned mill. The grinding of barley has been done here for many generations. Barley has in may ways been a kind of gold to the Skjåk community. The farmers were honour bound to produce barley of the very best quality. At Ofossen it all started with a small mill, but gradually larger capacity was needed. The mill was gradually expanded, and here people from almost the whole Skjåk area came to have their grain milled. This made Ofossen a place where people met, making it possible to run both a dairy, a shoe factory, a grocery store and a cafe here.

The mill area is situated on the edge of a delta that has a history spanning almost ten thousand years. The delta was formed in a glacierdammed lake the waters of which rippled the valley sides of modern Skjåk. About 1.5 kilometres east of Ofossen is the old Vollung bridge, which is a sonearched bridge from 1912.
