About 1 km to the west of the township centre of Bismo along the main road, you find a tørrstugu or dryhouse that has been used for drying barley. This house was built in 19922/23 and was used well into the 30ies. The people in Skjåk chose this building to be the cultural monument of the community in connection with the 1997 Year of Cultural Heritage. A dryhouse is a relict from a time when the local farmer was honour bound to grow first quality barley. This is till grown in Skjåk, but on a much less scale than formerly. To give the barley its good quality and storage potential it had to be dried well before grinding. The old barns had hay-drying racks on the sun side where the sheaves of harvest were placed to dry. After the threshing the grain was dried in a dryhouse which was jointly owned by several farms. The one seen here had 20 owners. The stove or oven was well tended before the grain was placed on the shelves. In this dryhouse there were seven shelves in two levels. One could dry up to a thousand kilos at a time. Not only grain was dried in such a house. Also malt for the brewing of beer was dried here. At such times there was a sweetish aroma around the house. Malt is grain made to spout in running water and is the main ingredient in the brewing of beer. Before the kitchen range became common on the farms, it was not unusual for women to bring their bread dough to have it roasted in the warm oven. There is a path from Bismo leading to the building. You can park your car in the parking space beside the office of the local bus company.
