Description

On a winter's day in 1865 a herring fisherman from Jaeren found some incredibly rich copper ore in Vigsnes. By about 1895 Vigsnes was one of Europe's greatest copper mining areas, which in its time generated 70% of Norway's copper export. The Statue of Liberty in New York is clad in copper produced in these mines, which were in operation between 1865-1972. The museum tells the story of the mining community and exhibitions illustrate the work methods they used. It is situated in picturesque surroundings with bridle paths and footpaths in "Fransehagen" and has an interesting playground for children.
