It's owned by the counties of Telemark and Vestfold, together with the eight municipalities of Bamble, Kragerø, Nome, Porsgrunn, Siljan, Skien, Lardal and Larvik.
The perimeter of these eight municipalities comprises the outer boundaries of the Geopark.

A UNESCO European Geopark is an international stamp of quality that gives us the legeal rights, obligations, and possibilities for cooperating with a network of other Geoparks in Europe.

The Geopark aims to spread knowledge of our unique geological heritage an show the interrelatedness between natural geological processes and our very existence.
