Description

Harvesting nature’s bounty was for generations the only way of making a decent living here in the county of Hordaland. Living off the sea and the land, often combined with producing handicrafts, was the way to make ends meet. Bergen was the commercial centre for the surrounding countryside, and was the destination for surplus produce and workers. With its collections of traditional houses, boats, tools and textiles, Hordamuseet gives visitors an insight into the unique way of life of the people of rural Hordaland.

The museum has an open air section consisting of 30 buildings. The rich archaeological finds in the museum grounds are evidence that people have lived here for 10,000 years. The Norwegian Road Museum’s exhibition at Hordamuseet includes machinery and equipment used for the construction and maintenance of the county’s roads.

In the Fanafjellet hills there are nine farm buildings, and each of them has something to tell us about summer farming in the mountains. The summer farm museum is situated in a beautiful area that is very popular with walkers.

Closed public holidays 1, 17, 26, 27 and 28 of May.
