Veitastrond

Tungestølen-Austerdalsbreen

"The finest ice-scenery in Europe", said the English mountaineer William Cecil Slingsby about the three wild ice-falls called Lokebreen, Odinbreen and Torsbreen which tumble down from the Jostedalsbreen glacier at the face of Austerdalsbreen. Here you can get just a taste of the wild glacier landscape without having to walk over the glacier itself.

Ljøsuregga

A walk of contrasts If you want to get the most out of the top of Ljøsuregga, you‘ll have to sneak through the rock piles. This is a trip full of contrasts! On the way up to Ljøsuregga, the mountain experiences are virtually lining up for you. Firstly, you’ll pass a multitude of swimming holes up along the lush river to Kjenndalsvatnet (Lake Kjenndal). Then from boulder to boulder you walk up through the rocky debris towards the summit, before it gradually flattens out, when you’ll probably notice a feeling of freedom coming over you. Then finally, a beautiful flat plateau awaits, providing views in all directions, and you’ll feel on top of the world!

Gjerde - Haugafjellstølen

A steep hike in a south-facing, sunny location, and the chance to swim in a mountain reservoir if you are feeling especially bold. The hike to Haugafjellstølen is popular with residents of Gjerde who like to keep in shape. The shieling is sheltered from the wind, but still offers great views. Until 1952 it was a hive of activity in the summer, with dairymaids milking cattle and making cheese. The shieling buildings and grazing sheep are a reminder of those days.
