Jostedal

Vangsen

Spectacular views of the whole of western Norway await you at the cairn. Below, to the west, lies Skåldalen, the shieling for Åsen farm. With its many rocky and snow-covered sections, the ascent of Vangsen is not for the faint-hearted. Vangsen, Jostedalen’s highest mountain, is easily accessible in the summer thanks to the Vanndalsvatnet access road. The trail is considered one of Norway’s best summit trails for skiers because of the heavy snowfall that lies for a long time. Vangsen means ploughshare, and when you look at the mountain from the bothy at Mannen, the name makes perfect sense.

Gjerde - Haugafjellstølen

A steep hike in a south-facing, sunny location, and the chance to swim in a mountain reservoir if you are feeling especially bold. The hike to Haugafjellstølen is popular with residents of Gjerde who like to keep in shape. The shieling is sheltered from the wind, but still offers great views. Until 1952 it was a hive of activity in the summer, with dairymaids milking cattle and making cheese. The shieling buildings and grazing sheep are a reminder of those days.

Dalsdalen - Vigdalstøl

A few hundred years ago this path was the main road between Jostedal and Lustrafjorden. Vigdalen was then a part of Dale and this path was the road to church. The path is called Bispevegen (The Bishop's road) after Bishop Johan Nordal Brun, who travelled this path when visiting Jostedalen. The year of passing and the first letters of his name are engraved in the mountain beneath Storhaug.
