The Vesterålen Museum was founded on the basis of a private initiative in the 1920’s. At that time it was located in Rødgården House in Melbu town centre, a building dating back to the 1700’s that was moved there for that purpose. Today, the Vesterålen Museum has been re-established in the venerable, old Melbu Hovedgård mansion.
The Omd turf museum
Parts of the cottage were built in about 1826 and it was extended in 1895. There is an old hearth pit inside, probably used for preparing food. Beside the cottage is a peat shed that was perhaps used earlier as a shelter for animals. Renovated in 2008 and use today as: turf museum shows history of turfing and with pictures and working tools, what the fishermen family used in the 1800s.
The Heggelund Cottage- museum
The cottage was moved to the Veita complex probably towards the end of the 1800s. It was very likely used as a boathouse/rorbu and is probably the only authentic rorbu dating back to that era. The house has a log core of hewn timber and porticos on each side, with a simple timber framework. It will serve as a museum / display. with funitures and pictures show the way of living in 1800s.
The old Trading Post at Jennestad (8 km from Sortland): An old trading post, located by the sea, easily accessible by boat – as it should be in the old days. Time has stood still after the closing of the shop in 1982. The shelves offers authentic products of all kinds, and you may also visit the old post office and ship expedition office.
Free entrance. Visitors may buy locally produced arts and crafts (husflid), postcards, sweets, literature and more. Nearby art gallery (100 m) also well worth a visit.
BØ I VESTERÅLEN
The Museum in Bø is beautifully located by the sea, in a landscape where fairytale characters still are alive. The female "hulder" and the "draugen", a creature living in the sea are to be seen by those who have patience and a vivid imagination.
The national fishing industry museum was established in the spring of 1991 as a public institution, and was named Norsk Fiskeindustrimuseum. The University of Tromsø, University of Bergen, NHH Bergen, Norges sildesalgslag, Sildemelfabrikkenes landsforening, LO, SND, Vesterålen regionråd, Hadsel kommune, Melbu Fiskeindustri, Vesterålsmuseet and NAKV are members of the institution.
The Polar Museum is situated in Fyrvika cove, not far from Andenes Lighthouse and Whale Safari Andenes. An exhibition from the polar regions is on show here, with emphasis on the life of hunter Hilmar Nøis, who spent 38 winters in Spitsbergen.
