Every Sunday we will give you the opportunity to visit Ny-Ålesund. This is a former mining town and also starting point for famous explorers race to the North pole. Roald Amundsen, known as the first person, both to the South- and North-pole, used Ny-Ålesund as his starting point when he reached the pole in 1926 with the Airship NORGE.
With the midnight sun on our bow we glide into the bay, right up to the magnificent Bore Glacier.
Early in the season the sea ice may still lie thick on the fjord, preventing og us from reaching the glacier itself. However, in exchange for this we may be lucky as to see seals sunbathing on the ice under the spring sun which refuses to set.
By the ice we will serve supper from the barbecue.
Please note that due to ice conditions in Billefjorden the ships will not reach Pyramiden before end of May.
As an alternative we follow the ice edge hunting for walrus, seals and the king of arctic.
The Russian mining settlement Pyramiden was abandoned in 1998, leaving the buildings and infrastructure intact. We pass close by the bird cliffs at Diabas before we reach Tempelfjorden and the cathedral-like mountain, Tempelfjellet. We head towards the Nordenskiöldbreen and whilst you enjoy the view, a warm barbequed lunch is served. We investigate the once so well groomed settlement. We follow the north side of the fjord and can reflect over the tragic winter in Svenskhuset at Kapp Thordsen.
Once the snow has settled in December or January, we can go for exciting snowmobile trips in Longyearbyen's surrounding areas.
The stars and the moonlight throw light in the polar night giving you an atmospheric experience. On a clear night it is not unusual to see the northern light. The reindeer dig in the snow looking for food and the fox tiptoes around in the dark.
We go to beautiful Kapp Linnè, situated in the outermost part of Isfjorden. Here we find Isfjord Radio, 80 km from Longyearbyen, and without any road a...
