Gjerde - Haugafjellstølen

A steep hike in a south-facing, sunny location, and the chance to swim in a mountain reservoir if you are feeling especially bold. The hike to Haugafjellstølen is popular with residents of Gjerde who like to keep in shape. The shieling is sheltered from the wind, but still offers great views. Until 1952 it was a hive of activity in the summer, with dairymaids milking cattle and making cheese. The shieling buildings and grazing sheep are a reminder of those days.

Nature Reserves

Small and almost untouched areas with special habitats or fauna of high scientific value are usually protected as nature reserves. This is the strictest form of protection that can be applied. Within the Sognefjord area there are several nature reserves, for instance bird and wetland reserves such as the Hafslovatnet lake (Luster), Bøyaøyra (Sogndal), Vetlefjordsøyra (Balestrand) and Grånåsmyrane (Aurland). The Skogteigen coniferous forest reserve in Luster, established in 1914, is the oldest nature reserve in Norway. The Nigardsbreen nature reserve (Luster) is connected to the Jostedalsbreen National Park and is probably one of Norway’s best-known nature reserves.

Tour de Jotunheimen- Bicycle Race

The Tour de Jotunheimen is a 430-kilometre-long bicycle race, which starts in Lærdal before crossing the Filefjell, Valdresflya and Sognefjell mountains and ending in Sogndal. The race is quite an experience, but it is only suitable for really well-trained cyclists. However, you can also take part in a shorter version called the Mini Jotunheimen, in which case you cycle the leg from Lom across the Sognefjell mountains and cycle along the northern shore of the Lusterfjord to Sogndal. The race is held at the beginning of July every year.
