Aquariums in Norway

Bergen Aquarium and the Norwegian Wild Salmon Centre in Lærdal are popular aquariums in Norway.
Aquariums in Norway
Nine aquariums open to the public: Bergen, Ålesund, Tromsø, Kabelvåg in Lofoten, Balestrand, Drøbak, Elverum, Lærdal and Risør.

Bergen Aquarium

Besides typical treasures from the Norwegian coastline the aquarium in Bergen has seals, penguins, as well as tropical fish and animals such as snakes, crocodiles and silk monkeys.

At the Bergen Aquarium there are more than 60 large and small aquariums where you can watch at close range all the weird and wonderful things that go on beneath the water's surface.

The Norwegian Wild Salmon Centre in Lærdal

Learn about the life and legends of the Atlantic salmon and about the protection, management and exploitation of the wild salmon stocks. Observe wild salmon and sea trout in the river currents underneath the waterfall.

The Norwegian Wild Salmon Centre has exhibitions where you can see how a salmon fly is made - step by step. You will also gain insight into the art of fly tying which has strong traditions in Lærdal.

Atlanterhavsparken - Ålesund Aquarium

Only a few minutes by car from the centre of Ålesund, where Breisundet meets the Atlantic ocean, you can find Atlanterhavsparken, one of the largest saltwater-aquariums in northern Europe. Children of all ages are invited to try fishing for crabs several times a day in one of the pools throughout the year.

Atlanterhavsparken is situated in the midst of a scenic area with hiking paths, monuments, fishing grounds, and a beach where you can go swimming or scuba diving. The area also has a nice view of the surrounding islands and vast ocean.

This architectural gem, integrated into the coastal nature between ocean and land, was officially opened by the His Majesty King Harald V and Her Majesty Queen Sonja in 1998.

North of the Arctic Circle and on the way to the North Cape, you will find Polaria in the city of Tromsø.

Polaria has an arctic aquarium where the main attractions are the bearded seals. The bearded seal is an arctic species, and they are popular among children, due to their quiet disposition and intelligent nature.

There are also knowledge-based exhibits of the most common species of fish in the Barents Sea and around Svalbard, and a panoramic cinema.

Lofoten Aquarium in Kabelvåg

At the Lofoten Aquarium, which has 23 aquarium tanks, you have the chance to study exciting marine life, with fish and sea mammals from Lofoten and the coast of Northern Norway.

Here you can explore living creatures from their habitat by the water's edge to the deepest depths of the sea, while at the same time gaining insight into the marine ecosystem.

Drøbak Aquarium

Drøbak Aquarium lies by the banks of the Oslofjord in the seaside town of Drøbak, in Follo. It is the only salt water aquarium in the region. The family attraction boasts more than two dozen tanks and pools. More than a hundred species of sea creature make up the rich fauna of the fjord, and you can see examples of most of them here. The aquarium has a touch pool where children can handle some of the sea life on display.
