The expansion of the urban communities of Innherred was particularly intense during the 1800s through industrialisation, increased traffic and centralisation.
Although they have a typical inland character, the towns of Innherred enjoy a great location beside the Trondheimfjord. The expression "sea and land, hand in hand" is perfectly suited for these small urban areas.
Levanger was among the first ports of key importance to the growth and development of Innherred as a whole. The old trading routes from Jämtland and the rest of Sweden went to Levanger, which became Innherred's first town in 1836.
Two decades later, in 1857, Steinkjer also got the same status and now functions as the area's capital and administrative centre. Verdal was granted town status in 1998. The industrial area in Verdal is one of the best and most important in Norway as a whole.
